Background

The Gate was established in 1989 by Michael and Adrian Daniel, brothers with an Indo-Iraqi heritage who wanted to recreate the diverse flavours and culinary experiences they had enjoyed as children, eating food with Arabic, Indian and Jewish influences. We started with passion and creativity and we maintain that passion and creativity today. Originally opening in Hammersmith, we have successfully launched other branches in Islington and most recently Marylebone in December 2016.

Our Story

  • The cooking at the Gate reflects the diverse cultural background in which we grew up – what one might call Indo-Iraqi Jewish. Our grandmothers blended Indian and Arabic cuisines with traditional Jewish food.
  • It seemed perfectly natural that we should apply the same principles at the restaurant. The food we serve is the food of our childhood, modulated by French and Italian influences. When we opened the Gate, we had had no formal training and knew nothing about running a restaurant – we were just a couple of guys who knew what we liked to eat – but we knew that food was sacred and should be celebrated.
  • At the restaurant we try to do just that: celebrate the food. This means, amongst other things, that we source our ingredients with care; we intensify flavour by careful cooking and by combining ingredients in unexpected ways. We try to make our dishes as visually pleasing as possible; and we try and do this in a fun and relaxed way.

Growing Success

  • Michael and Adrian’s Hammersmith restaurant quickly became a go-to destination for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike and its reputation grew. Now widely recognised as one of the best vegetarian restaurants in London, the UK and with accolades from around the world, The Gate is both a much-loved institution with a loyal and devoted following and a restaurant which has been quietly and confidently promoting healthy-eating for almost three decades.
  • The Gate has won numerous awards and accolades including a 3* Sustainability rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association, No. 1 position in the Top 10 vegetarian restaurants in the world as chosen by Epicurious and was named “the jewel in the crown” of vegetarian restaurants in London by Conde Nast Traveller.

The Gate Hammersmith

The Gate Hammersmith is located in what was once the studio of artist Sir Frank Brangwyn, next to the Hammersmith Apollo.

The Gate Islington

When it was due to close for refurbishment in 2012, Michael took the decision to open a second branch in Islington. The Gate Islington has become a popular and well-established institution in its own right and since the reopening of the Hammersmith restaurant in 2014 the restaurants have gone from strength to strength. The Gate Islington is the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded Autism Friendly Status by the National Autistic Society.

The Gate Marylebone

The Gate has just launched a new outpost in Seymour Place, Marylebone. The Gate Seymour Place opened its doors in December 2016, bringing the creative and delicious vegetarian food enjoyed at the Hammersmith and Islington restaurants to this popular area of Central London.
