We are currently working towards implementing further environmental measures to try and reduce The Gresham Hotel’s ‘Carbon Footprint’. Some of the measures which we take in the hotel include: Recycling as much glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and cans as possible, including all the newspapers left behind in the bedrooms. We segregate organic waste from our kitchens, and send this to be composted. Fitting all the standard lamps in the bedrooms and many more lights throughout the hotel with low energy bulbs to reduce our energy consumption. Water saving devices are fitted in the toilet cisterns and urinals which help to save water in our hotel. There are many more measures in place in the hotel and our committed ‘Green Team’ meets every month to discuss new ideas for expanding our efforts further.

The History

In 1817 Thomas Gresham purchased 21-22 Sackville Street and commenced business there as a hotel. Thomas Gresham is a fascinating person. He was a foundling child, abandoned on the steps of the Royal Exchange, Sir Thomas Gresham a famous merchant-politician in the Elizabethan era. Thomas Gresham came to Ireland, and as a very young man obtained employment in the service of William Beauman of Rutland Square, Dublin. After some time, and while still comparatively young, he became butler to this family. This was an important position in the Georgian household, with its complicated domestic structure. In 1817, Thomas Gresham left William Beauman’s household to open a hotel in nearby Sackville Street. How he acquired the capital to undertake an enterprise of this kind is not known. Today, Gresham Hotels is now a privately owned company consisting of four properties in Brussels, Cork, Dublin and Hamburg. Following a major refurbishment in 2013, The Gresham Hotel Dublin, is swiftly progressing into the 21st century, building on our long established reputation for superior service and excellent facilities. The Gresham Hotel in Dublin is an institution and is known throughout the world.
